Birthing through strength and compassion

Our mission is to cultivate community healing through multilingual doula care, education, pregnancy support, and ancestral practices with respect for culture, race, immigration status, religion, gender, and beliefs. BCCC provides on-call doula services and birth support to families in San Francisco. We support parents with child development and health education virtually and in-person at our center located in the Excelsior District. Our center also provides mentorship and training to other prospective doulas from our community as part of our model of sustainability.

Our growing community of 60+ Doulas are trained in ancestral lineages from Guatemala, Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, Colombia, and Nicaragua. We support our community through birth companionship and education for healthy birthing journeys and aftercare.

Low-income and immigrant families face challenges beyond pregnancy, we provide no-cost doula services, parent education, baby essentials, and food distribution for new parents and families. We are changing the system by training Doulas from the community they serve, bringing in cultural practices, understanding, and a career path that benefits their families and communities.

Meeting a Critical Need

When the pandemic pushed healthcare systems to their breaking point, three women—Veronica, Jeny, and Cristy—united around a shared vision. Each had experienced firsthand the profound difference that a Spanish-speaking, culturally-competent doula makes during childbirth in San Francisco. Their coffee shop conversations quickly evolved into action when a new mother they had supported during pregnancy called in desperation, needing diapers and food.

This moment crystallized their understanding: immigrant families, separated from extended support networks, needed comprehensive care beyond the birthing room. Despite their personal fears during COVID-19, they began making home deliveries when stores and services were shuttered, ensuring new mothers weren't suffering in isolation. From these acts of compassion, Birth Companions Community Center (BCCC) was born.

“Our vision is to transform the birthing experience for all pregnancies through birth, postpartum doula care, and advocacy.”

The Founders

Our professional training and years of experience have grown as we take on new challenges, and help educate the next generation of Birth Companions. Today we pave the way by bringing diverse options for all mothers and Birth Workers in the Bay Area and beyond. We lead this community with our hearts and uplift human life by supporting mothers with the solidarity needed to face life-changing circumstances.
